Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a stellar start as India’s new red-ball opener, averaging 64.05 over 20 innings and amassing 1217 runs.
Now just 283 runs away from the 1500 mark, he’s India’s top scorer in this World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and could become the first Indian to reach 1500 runs in a single WTC cycle.
Previously, Ajinkya Rahane held the top WTC run tally for India with 1159 runs, which Jaiswal surpassed during the Bangladesh series.
In the first WTC cycle, Joe Root and Marnus Labuschagne crossed the 1500 mark, and Root has since achieved it in consecutive cycles.
Jaiswal sits right behind him this cycle, with a chance to reach 2000 runs if he maintains his pace. He’s also on track to potentially become the quickest Indian to 2000 Test runs, a record held jointly by Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag at 40 innings.
Jaiswal’s recent performances against the West Indies and England have bolstered his stats, and he now faces three home Tests against New Zealand, starting October 16 in Bangalore, with WTC finals qualification on the line.
