In an unexpected turn of events, Mithali Raj and the Gujarat Giants have mutually parted ways just days before the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 auction.
Mithali, who served as mentor and advisor for the franchise over the past two seasons, has stepped down following her new role with the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA).
A report revealed that the split was amicable, with an official announcement expected soon. While Mithali initially signed a three-year contract, the partnership ended prematurely after two seasons, during which the Gujarat Giants finished last in the points table twice.
The Giants’ bowling coach, Nooshin Al Khadeer, has also opted not to renew her contract, citing her focus on coaching the India Under-19 Women’s team. The franchise is expected to announce replacements for both Mithali and Nooshin on December 12.
Despite these departures, head coach Michael Klinger and fielding coach Carl Hopkinson will retain their roles for the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, the WPL 2025 auction is set to take place on December 15 in Bengaluru, featuring 120 players, including 91 Indians and 29 overseas players.
With 19 open slots across five teams, franchises are gearing up to finalize their squads. Gujarat Giants lead with the largest purse of INR 4.4 crore, while Delhi Capitals have the smallest budget at INR 2.5 crore.
Notable names in the auction include England pacer Lauren Bell, entering with a base price of INR 30 lakhs. Bell, who was part of the UP Warriorz in the inaugural WPL season but didn’t play, will be a key player to watch.
Ahead of the auction, Gujarat Giants released several players, including Sneh Rana, Lea Tahuhu, Kathryn Bryce, Veda Krishnamurthy, and Trisha Poojitha. However, they have retained a solid core led by skipper Beth Mooney and players like Ashleigh Gardner, Laura Wolvaardt, and Harleen Deol, setting the stage for a revamped squad in the next season.
