Day 1 of the third Test between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was full of ups and downs for the hosts.
After conceding 235 runs in New Zealand’s first innings, India’s batting lineup struggled once again.
Virat Kohli’s performance came under scrutiny after he was run out for a risky single. With India at 84/3, Kohli attempted a quick single off Rachin Ravindra but was caught short by Matt Henry’s throw despite diving. Kohli departed for four runs off six balls, leaving India at 84/4.
New Zealand, having batted first, saw Tom Latham and Devon Conway score 28 and four runs respectively before falling early. Half-centuries from Will Young (71 off 138) and Daryl Mitchell (82 off 129) pushed New Zealand to 235.
Ravindra Jadeja led India’s bowling with five wickets, while Washington Sundar and Akash Deep took four and one respectively.
In India’s innings, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal were dismissed cheaply. Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 31, with Rishabh Pant at one run as India ended Day 1 at 86/4, trailing by 149 runs. Mohammed Siraj was out for a duck.
