India endured a significant setback in the second Test of the three-match series against New Zealand, suffering a 113-run defeat in Pune.
This loss follows their opening defeat in Bengaluru, which put the team under pressure to level the series. However, their efforts to turn the tables fell short, allowing New Zealand to clinch the series, marking their first series win on Indian soil since 2012-13.
Indian batters struggled throughout the match, particularly in the first innings, where they were bowled out for just 156. This left New Zealand firmly in control, setting a challenging target of 359 for India to chase in the second innings.
Although India showed a more resilient performance, scoring 245, they ultimately failed to meet the target. Virat Kohli’s performance was especially disappointing; he managed only 1 run in the first innings and 17 in the second.
His frustration was apparent when a clip of him striking a water box with his bat surfaced online, reflecting his reaction to the dismissal in the second innings.
Despite this setback, India retains the top spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, with 98 points from 13 matches. Australia is close behind, with 90 points from 12 matches, making India’s WTC position increasingly precarious.
The final match in the series, set to be played at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on November 1, presents an opportunity for India to salvage pride and maintain their lead in the standings.
A win in Mumbai would not only prevent a whitewash but also reaffirm India’s home dominance, which has been a cornerstone of their WTC journey.
