The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) between Australia (AUS) and India (IND) is in full swing, with both teams battling it out on Day 2 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
While the day featured brilliant cricket, including a stunning 152 by Travis Head and a comeback century by Steve Smith (101), the atmosphere took an unexpected twist with some creative fan engagement.
During the third Test, fans dressed as iconic Star Wars characters, including Stormtroopers—nicknamed “Gabbatroopers”—and Darth Vader, brought a playful energy to the stands. Their presence lightened the mood and offered comic relief, especially after the crowd had earlier directed some hostility toward Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) even shared photos of the Star Wars fans on social media, amplifying the buzz and adding a touch of Hollywood flair to the Test match.
Though there’s no historical connection between Star Wars and cricket, these fans have appeared in similar costumes during previous Ashes games between Australia and England. Their appearance at the Gabba added a unique element to an otherwise intense day of Test cricket.
On the cricketing front, Australia ended Day 2 in a commanding position. After a rain-hit Day 1, Travis Head continued his stellar form, smashing yet another century and ending his lean run at the Gabba.
Steve Smith also broke his drought, scoring his first Test ton in 18 innings. Together, Head and Smith forged a massive 241-run partnership to rescue Australia after losing their openers early.
India’s bowlers fought back late in the day, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the charge and claiming a brilliant five-wicket haul, including the key wickets of Head and Smith.
Bumrah’s efforts gave India some hope, but Australia’s total of 347/6 in 90.1 overs puts them in a strong position, with Alex Carey and skipper Pat Cummins at the crease.
Rohit Sharma’s decision to bowl first on a batting-friendly pitch has drawn criticism, as the visitors now face an uphill task to claw their way back into the match.
