Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer recently shared his frustration over unsolicited advice on his batting technique, particularly regarding short-pitched deliveries.
A key figure in India’s middle order during the 2023 ODI World Cup, Iyer amassed 530 runs in 11 innings at an impressive average of 66.25, including two centuries and three fifties, effectively silencing many critics.
However, discussions about his vulnerability to short-pitched bowling persist. Iyer described such unsolicited comments as irritating, especially when coming from individuals who lack firsthand experience.
“It’s irritating, especially when it comes from people who haven’t faced 150 km/h deliveries, advising you to play a certain way. They have the right to share opinions, but they should discuss it among themselves, not with the player directly,” Iyer shared.
Undeterred by the criticism, Iyer has focused on refining his game, drawing inspiration from unconventional sources like baseball to improve his power-hitting.
“I’ve watched several YouTube videos on how to achieve shoulder and hip separation. It has significantly helped my power-hitting, especially in T20s where you need to switch gears and accelerate at any point,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Iyer reportedly missed a domestic match for Mumbai, which led to his exclusion from the BCCI’s annual contract list for 2024-25. Despite this, he made headlines during the IPL 2025 auction when Punjab Kings acquired him for a staggering INR 26.75 crore, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL history.
Reflecting on the auction, Iyer said, “I was expecting a good amount, but I never imagined such fierce competition between two teams. At one point, I shut the door, went to the washroom, and told myself I didn’t want to listen to what was happening.”
Looking ahead, Iyer has been named in India’s 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. He will also play in the three-match ODI series against England, serving as crucial preparation for the marquee event.
