Australia batter Travis Head has voiced support for India skipper Rohit Sharma’s decision to skip the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 due to family commitments.
Head stated that Rohit made the right choice to stay with his family after the birth of his second child.
The India National Cricket Team will be without Rohit’s leadership in the first Test of the five-match series, set to begin on November 22 at the WACA Stadium in Perth. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side in Rohit’s absence.
Rohit chose to remain in India with his wife after they welcomed their second child on November 15.
Despite earlier speculation that he might join the team before the series opener, Rohit confirmed to the BCCI that he would miss the first Test and join the squad for the second match in Adelaide.
Critics have questioned Rohit’s decision, citing India’s recent struggles, including a home whitewash against New Zealand. Many felt that the captain’s presence in Australia was crucial for a strong start to the series.
Amid the criticism, Travis Head defended Rohit’s decision, expressing understanding of the sacrifices cricketers make.
“One hundred percent, I support Rohit’s decision. I would have done the same. As cricketers, we live a privileged life but miss out on important milestones. You don’t get that time back. Hopefully, he returns at some stage in this series,” Head said.
With Rohit unavailable, Jasprit Bumrah will captain India in the crucial first Test. The pacer has a significant opportunity to showcase his leadership skills and spearhead the bowling attack.
India faces immense pressure to perform in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as their chances of qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship final hinge on winning four Tests and drawing one. A single loss could jeopardize their campaign.
Rohit is expected to rejoin the squad for the second Test, with hopes of leading India to a series victory Down Under.
