The fourth Test of the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy was initially set to be Rohit Sharma’s final appearance in Test cricket.
However, recent developments suggest that Rohit reconsidered his decision after being persuaded by well-wishers to delay his retirement. This follows the unexpected “opting out” of the Sydney Test by the top-order batter, which sparked speculation.
A source close to the matter revealed that Rohit had made up his mind to retire after the MCG Test but was convinced otherwise by individuals outside the team. “Rohit had decided to step away after MCG. If not for his well-wishers urging him to reconsider, we could have witnessed another retirement in Australia after Ashwin’s,” the source told The Times of India.
Reports also suggest ongoing tensions between Rohit and head coach Gautam Gambhir, with Rohit’s initial retirement plans reportedly not sitting well with the coach. Rohit ultimately had a change of heart on the eve of the New Year’s Test in Sydney.
His lackluster form—scoring just 31 runs in five innings—combined with criticism over tactical decisions, added to the scrutiny. For the final Test, Rohit was left out of the 15-member squad, and Jasprit Bumrah was named captain.
Despite the speculation, Rohit appears determined to continue in the longest format. Speaking to *Star Sports* during the SCT Test, he dismissed the rumors and stated that he was sensible enough to make decisions in the team’s best interest, particularly when his form was not contributing significantly.
Rohit’s focus now shifts to India’s upcoming white-ball series against England, followed by the Champions Trophy. Having retired from T20Is last year, Rohit will aim to regain form in the three ODIs against England to boost his confidence ahead of the marquee tournament.
