The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence on February 19 with the opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi. Ahead of the tournament opener, all team captains are expected to attend a photoshoot and press conference at the venue.
However, India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, has been denied permission by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to travel to Pakistan for the customary event. India, slated to play all their matches in Dubai due to geopolitical considerations, has already secured ICC approval to avoid playing in Pakistan. According to a source, the star Indian cricketer will not be part of the Captains’ Day event. A BCCI source remarked, “ICC has already accommodated India’s request not to schedule its Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan, so these are minor issues.” This decision has further strained relations between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the BCCI. The PCB has expressed frustration with reports suggesting India’s refusal to feature “Pakistan” on their jerseys as part of the tournament logo. A PCB official criticized the BCCI’s approach, stating, “The BCCI is bringing politics into cricket, which is not good for the game. They’ve refused to play in Pakistan, denied their captain’s participation in the opening ceremony, and now there are reports about the jersey issue. We trust the ICC, under Jay Shah’s chairmanship, will support Pakistan and ensure fairness.” Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma is focused on preparations for the Champions Trophy. He is set to play in a Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir, starting January 23, before returning to national duties for the ODI series against England. Following the England series, Rohit will lead India in the eight-team Champions Trophy.
