Virat Kohli has found himself in the spotlight for controversial reasons during the ongoing fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The veteran batter’s shoulder bump on Australian debutant Sam Konstas sparked widespread criticism from former cricketers and the Australian media. The MCG crowd also expressed their displeasure, greeting Kohli with boos when he came out to bat on Day 2.
Kohli managed 36 runs off 86 balls before falling to a delivery outside the off-stump, a recurring weakness. As he walked back to the pavilion, he faced verbal taunts from sections of the crowd near the tunnel.
Initially ignoring the heckling, Kohli eventually responded with a sharp glare at the fans, who continued their jeers. Video footage of the incident quickly went viral on social media, showing Kohli being escorted by security after appearing visibly frustrated.
Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) CEO Stuart Fox addressed the incident, revealing that neither Kohli nor the BCCI had lodged a formal complaint.
“You’re never comfortable when fans are heavily engaging with a player. As the operator, you’re always observing. I reviewed the footage and spoke with security. There’s been no official complaint from India; they seem comfortable with how it’s been handled. It looked like Kohli just turned his head back after some late heckling,” Fox said.
He added, “I’d be concerned if the behavior crossed into abuse or physical contact—that’s the line we ensure isn’t crossed. I love Kohli and what he’s done for the game. I don’t particularly enjoy the booing. He deserves credit for building this incredible rivalry.”
