Hilarious and surreal scenes unfolded at the Adelaide Oval during the Big Bash League 2024-25 clash between the Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat.
In a moment straight out of a movie, Liam Haskett’s father, sitting in the crowd, caught a ball hit off his own son’s bowling. The remarkable incident happened during the fourth over of Brisbane’s chase when Nathan McSweeney pulled a short-of-a-length delivery into the midwicket stands.
Haskett’s father executed the catch in a classic reverse-cup style, celebrated briefly, and promptly tossed the ball back into play.
While the crowd, including his wife seated beside him, cheered the effort, his stern expression revealed mixed emotions—pride for his catch but disappointment over his son being hit all over the park.
Despite the bittersweet moment, Adelaide Strikers secured a convincing 56-run victory in the high-scoring encounter. Haskett redeemed himself later, picking up two wickets in his four-over spell and taking a catch at deep midwicket.
Earlier in the match, Strikers captain Matthew Short smashed a blistering 54-ball 109, supported by rapid half-centuries from Chris Lynn and Alex Ross, propelling the hosts to a colossal 251.
In response, Brisbane Heat’s batting faltered, with no player able to build a substantial innings, leaving them well short of the target.
