Shreyas Iyer is set to be a top attraction in the IPL 2025 auction, poised to ignite a bidding war among franchises.
After three seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Iyer was released despite leading KKR to an IPL title in 2024. While KKR reportedly hoped to retain him, CEO Venky Mysore confirmed that Iyer opted to enter the auction instead.
With his leadership qualities highly sought after, several franchises are reportedly eyeing him. According to the Times of India, Iyer’s captaincy skills make him a prime target for teams in need of a strong leader.
Iyer’s IPL journey began in 2015 with Delhi Capitals, where he debuted with 439 runs across 14 games, impressing with four half-centuries. By 2018, he was appointed captain, taking over from Gautam Gambhir mid-season.
The next year, Iyer led Delhi to a playoff spot for the first time since 2012, and in 2020, he took the team to their first-ever final. After a successful stint with Delhi, he joined KKR in 2022.
In his debut season with KKR, Iyer scored 401 runs with three half-centuries but missed the entire 2023 season due to a back injury.
He made a strong comeback in 2024, leading KKR to their third IPL title and scoring 351 runs, including two fifties. As Iyer heads into the auction, franchises are eager to bring his experience and leadership into their ranks.
