As anticipated, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have appointed Shreyas Iyer as their captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
The right-handed batter was acquired by the Punjab-based franchise during the IPL 2025 mega-auction for a record-breaking sum of INR 26.75 crore. Shreyas, who successfully led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their first IPL title in 10 years during the 2024 season, opted to enter the auction to test his market value despite KKR’s desire to retain him. According to KKR CEO Venky Mysore, the franchise made every effort to keep him, but Shreyas decided to explore new opportunities. On the evening of January 12, PBKS announced their new captain through a social media post, introducing Shreyas to their fanbase. Speaking after his appointment, Shreyas expressed his gratitude, “I am honored that the team has placed its faith in me. I hope to repay this trust by delivering our maiden title.” Shreyas recently showcased his leadership skills by guiding Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in December. However, the team failed to reach the knockout stages of the subsequent Vijay Hazare Trophy under his captaincy. The 30-year-old is also in contention for India’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against England, where he is expected to bat at No. 4. Additionally, he is likely to feature in the Champions Trophy 2025. Shreyas last represented India in August 2024 during an ODI series against Sri Lanka.
