The Indian cricket team has come under heavy criticism following a string of poor performances, with reports of tensions between the coaching staff and players further compounding their troubles.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has been at the center of scrutiny, facing backlash for the team’s struggles. Under his tenure, India has lost six of their last 10 Tests, including a 3-1 defeat in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, ending a decade of dominance in the bilateral series. Amid reports of discord within the dressing room, fresh allegations of a potential rift between Gambhir and bowling coach Morne Morkel have surfaced. According to a report, Gambhir was upset with Morkel’s tardiness after he arrived late to a practice session due to personal commitments. The incident reportedly led to Gambhir reprimanding Morkel in front of the team. “Gambhir is very strict about discipline. He reprimanded Morkel immediately at the ground. The board has been informed that Morkel was somewhat reserved for the remainder of the tour. It’s up to them to resolve their issues for the team to function smoothly,” a source quoted in the report stated. Batting coach Abhishek Nayar is also under scrutiny, with the board reportedly seeking player feedback on whether the 41-year-old has been making a meaningful impact. Q uestions have similarly been raised about assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate’s contribution, with his limited international experience being a point of contention. “Abhishek Nayar is particularly under the scanner, especially since Gambhir himself is an accomplished batter. The board has asked players whether Nayar is adding value. Ryan ten Doeschate’s role is also being questioned, as his lack of international experience raises doubts about his ability to enhance the performance of international players,” the source added. The mounting criticism highlights the challenges faced by the team’s management as they navigate their current slump, with calls for greater accountability and clarity in roles.
