Australia’s T20I preparations for the Pakistan series have suffered a setback with all-rounder Cooper Connolly ruled out due to a fractured left hand sustained during the third ODI at Perth Stadium.
The injury occurred in the 17th over when Connolly attempted a pull shot against Pakistani pacer Mohammad Hasnain but was struck painfully on the glove. Though he initially tried to continue, the 21-year-old was forced to retire hurt shortly after.
Subsequent scans revealed a fracture to the fourth metacarpal in his left hand, and he is scheduled to meet with a specialist in Perth for further assessment.
Connolly’s absence is a significant loss for Australia, as he had been identified as a potential key player for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Known for his powerful finishing abilities and left-arm spin, Connolly made his international debut in September and was quickly integrated into Australia’s limited-overs plans.
His injury not only affects Australia’s T20I squad but also raises concerns for his participation with the Perth Scorchers in the upcoming Big Bash League, which starts on December 15, as well as his involvement in Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield campaign.
Cricket Australia is expected to name a replacement for Connolly in the coming days, adding a new challenge for selectors to find someone with similar versatility.
Meanwhile, Pakistan marked a historic achievement, securing their first bilateral ODI series win on Australian soil in 22 years, a milestone that underscores their impressive form heading into the T20 series.
