Jasprit Bumrah’s selection in India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has generated excitement among fans.
However, doubts persist regarding his availability, especially for the multi-nation tournament.
Chairman of the men’s senior selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, confirmed that Bumrah will miss the first two ODIs against England due to ongoing fitness concerns. While he has been included in both squads, his participation remains conditional on recovery.
Harshit Rana has been named as Bumrah’s cover for the three-match England series, but no backup has been announced for the Champions Trophy.
Speaking at a press conference, Ajit Agarkar said, “We are hoping Bumrah will be fit. If not, we’ll have to reassess.”
Captain Rohit Sharma echoed similar uncertainty, “We are not sure about Bumrah’s availability yet.”
A report revealed that Bumrah is scheduled for crucial scans on February 2 to evaluate his rehabilitation progress. These scans will play a decisive role in determining his readiness for the Champions Trophy.
India’s premier pacer has been advised to reduce his workload for five weeks, with a re-evaluation planned before finalizing his comeback. A significant update on his fitness is expected around February 9, during the second ODI against England.
The timing is critical as team management must finalize any changes to the Champions Trophy squad by February 13.
In light of Bumrah’s uncertain fitness, the selectors included Arshdeep Singh in the Champions Trophy squad for his ability to bowl effectively across all phases of an innings.
Mohammed Siraj was overlooked, with Rohit Sharma explaining, “Siraj’s effectiveness decreases when he’s not bowling with the new ball.”
Bumrah sustained a back spasm during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney while leading the side in Rohit’s absence. The injury sidelined him from bowling in the second innings, a culmination of heavy workload during the series.
Despite this setback, Bumrah delivered a phenomenal performance, claiming 32 wickets in nine innings at a remarkable average. He was named Player of the Series for his efforts, even though India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 by a 3-1 margin.
As India await clarity on Bumrah’s fitness, hopes remain high for his return to lead the pace attack in the Champions Trophy. The coming weeks will be pivotal for both the player and the team.
