After much speculation about Australia’s new opener, Nathan McSweeney was named in the 13-member squad for the Perth Test against India.
The 25-year-old Queensland batsman has impressed with 2,252 runs in just 34 first-class games. Following the selection announcement, Travis Head welcomed McSweeney with a playful message.
McSweeney shared that Head sent him a text hinting he might face a barrage of shots from Indian batters, humorously offering him his close-in fielding pads—a sign he’ll likely be positioned at forward short leg or silly point.
“Travis texted me saying, ‘I can give you my bat pad pads,’ so it seems I’ll be right under there,” McSweeney shared.
Usman Khawaja, McSweeney’s likely opening partner, also transitioned from the middle order to an opener. McSweeney noted he’s comfortable with the challenge, drawing inspiration from Khawaja and regularly training with the new ball.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity. I’ll return to Adelaide to train with my batting coach, and prepare for the series. I’ve heard Uzzie isn’t a fan of facing the first ball; I did so during Australia A’s innings against India A at the MCG, so I’m comfortable with that,” McSweeney added.
