Jasprit Bumrah returned to action after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win with a stellar performance in the first Test against Bangladesh on September 19, taking five wickets.
He continued his dominance in the second Test, claiming six wickets and leading India to a 2-0 series victory. This performance helped Bumrah surpass Ravichandran Ashwin to become the world’s No. 1 Test bowler.

Ashwin, quick to congratulate his teammate, shared an Instagram story, stating, “You belong here,” as Bumrah now leads with 870 points, just ahead of Ashwin’s 869. Bumrah also ranks eighth in the ODI bowlers’ list with 645 points.
Ashwin, meanwhile, dazzled in the first Test in his hometown of Chennai, scoring a century in the first innings and taking six wickets in the second, earning Player of the Match honors. He continued his strong form in the second Test, taking five more wickets.
Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin said, “I had huge shoes to fill, replacing Harbhajan. I used to replicate his action in junior cricket; he was an inspiration to me. People have often doubted if I could deliver in red-ball cricket since I came from the IPL, but many have helped me along the way.”
