Star England batter Joe Root reached a major milestone by surpassing Sir Alastair Cook as England’s highest Test run-scorer, scoring an unbeaten 142 on Day 3 of the first Test against Pakistan in Multan.
This achievement places him fifth on the all-time Test run-scorers list.
Cook believes Root could even challenge Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 runs, stating on BBC Test Match Special, “I can see him overhauling Tendulkar’s record.
While Sachin is still the favorite, Root has a real chance if he stays fit and injury-free.”
Root has thrived since Ben Stokes took over as captain, allowing him to focus solely on his batting. Cook added, *“The captaincy change has freed him, and I don’t see him losing that hunger anytime soon.”*
Stokes, currently sidelined due to injury, praised Root’s selflessness and dedication, saying, “He always puts the team first; his runs are just a bonus for us.”
Root, who scored his 35th Test century, has built a strong partnership with Harry Brook, narrowing the deficit against Pakistan’s formidable first-innings total.
